Protect Our Children: A Country Air Radio Commentary

The Supreme Court of Canada recently struck down mandatory minimum sentences for possession and accessing child sexual abuse material, citing rare “special cases.” While the decision raises important legal questions, one thing is clear: we must protect our children.

Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre has stated clearly: “Child porn users must face mandatory prison time. The Supreme Court ruling today removing those penalties was dead wrong. Conservatives will use the Notwithstanding Clause to protect the rights of children. We must protect our children.”

Prevention is the first line of defense. Parents, guardians, and communities must educate youth about the dangers and harms of child sexual exploitation material. Supervision, open conversations, and guidance for vulnerable individuals can prevent the rare cases that the courts worry about.

But prevention alone is not enough. Mandatory sentencing remains essential. It deters offenders, ensures justice for victims, and guarantees consistent consequences. Those who choose to exploit children must face serious prison time.

The solution is clear: educate to prevent, enforce to protect. Together, families, communities, and the law can keep children safe — both online and in the real world.

Because protecting children is not optional — it’s a responsibility we all share.
